Local Boy Celebrates With Trash Party

When Aidan Sheehan’s mom, Beth, started talking to Aidan about how he wanted to celebrate his 10th birthday, she got an unexpected response. Aidan did not want to do the typical “birthday stuff.” He said, “Mom, I want to go pick up trash somewhere.”

Beth took a couple of days to think about Aidan’s request and again asked him, if he could do anything he wanted for his birthday, what would he want to do. Aidan again stated: “Mom, I’m sure. I want to go pick up trash.” Beth met the challenge head on and reached out to For the Love of the Lake for ideas. Melanie Landay suggested a party at Tee Pee Hill and offered to provide the trash and recycle bags, gloves and reach-it sticks.

Then things got really interesting. Aidan and Beth sent “evites” to Aidan’s friends (no paper wasted!). And Aidan decided that instead of gifts, he would ask his friends to bring donations or gifts to benefit Community Partners of Dallas, a program that supports abused or neglected children in the foster care system. Beth said this idea provided for a great discussion about why some kids don’t have parents who can take care of them and why some kids may not have as much as others.

On Saturday, May 19, Aidan and 10 of his friends gathered at Tee Pee Hill in White Rock Lake Park to celebrate Aidan’s birthday. They continued with the “going green” theme by using cloth table clothes and serving “dirt cake” decorated with signs that said, “Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.” Instead of traditional party favors, each guest received a reusable water bottle. And for fun? Why, all the guests picked up trash of course!

Aidan’s idea to give back paid off in a big way. He and his guests picked up two bags of trash and one bag of recycling. And, Aidan was also able to donate about 15 gifts to boys and girls (ages 10 to 14), who are in foster care. For the Love of the Lake would like to thank Aidan and say that we are proud to have him and his family in our East Dallas community!
